History--Heroes and Villains

Identify the 10 greatest people, places, or events that shaped the course of history. Who or what comes to mind? Hitler? Shakespeare? Fleming? The Manhattan Project?
ABC-CLIO, publishers of reference materials, is sponsoring a contest asking high school students to answer that question. Entries can be submitted in a variety of formats from essays to videos. Contestants work in teams of two to six members each. Of course, winners will garner prizes. Did I mention cash?
Check out ABC-CLIO's History Uncovered contest for more information.
For the contest, you must use ABC-Clio's database in your work. Its address is http://www.socialstudies.abc-clio.com .
From that address, you can launch databases on world geography, ancient history, world history, American history, American government, U.S. geography, U.S. at War, and Issues.
Your user ID and password are the same: HopatcongStudent. Both are case sensitive.
Keep track of where you gather information. You will need to cite sources in MLA format when you submit your project. I suggest using Noodle Tools. (You saw this coming, right?)
Find nitty gritty details about the History Uncovered contest here.
     Entries will judged based on:
     • Students’ understanding of the historical significance of their selections
     • Students’ demonstration of critical thinking
     • Clear and effective communication of ideas
     • Accuracy of the students’ research and citations
     • Synthesis, or composition and flow of the Entry
"Scores are not impacted by a team’s choice of Entry format (essay, audio podcast, animation, video, or slide show), or by a Team’s specific selections of people, events, and places," according to ABC-CLIO.
What persons or things do you think have affected the lives we lead now? It's an interesting question.
Come on. Let's win some cash and prizes!

What do you think about Jesus? Even if you are not Christian, there is no debating the fact that he has greatly influenced our society.

Obviously Martin Luther King Jr. was a major influence on ending segregation. No doubt he was one of the very important people in our history.

The deaths of approximately 6 million Jews in the Holocaust has impacted the world tremendously. It was a horrific mass extermination that most of the world either knows about, or took place in.

Well with MLK, I'd probably only put him in if I was doing U.S History or the other topic with U.S. He was definately influential and important in our country, but I think that there are plenty of other people before him in line when it comes to the world.

WWII was deffinately an important event in the world's history. It has changed not only America's history, but also the rest of the world. Hitler and the Holocaust are both from this period as well.

We're doing modern history of the world... is Jesus Christ still apilicable? I mean, sure he lived like a million years ago but he still greatly influences society, even if he does influence YOU in particular.

Breaking the sound barrier hasn't really influenced the world that that much I don't think. But, if you have a good argument...

I think Jesus would be an okay one, or at least religion as a whole because it still influences the world today. Maybe if you bring in recent religions like scientology or something, then you can tie in Christianity and even Jesus.

Probrably it is too controversail to be on ABC-CLIO

I think that even though there is no fact there was Jesus, and that some believe in him and others don't, the idea of Jesus and just the idea that there is a God or "greater power" is influential in itself. Even if you do not believe, it still affects your life, whether you relize it or not.

I think that Nelson Mandela had a really big impact on our world. He stood up for his rights even though he knew there was punishment involved.

Whoever said ancient egyptians for ancient history :
I think that's a really important one, especially if you're doing ancient history, but I think you should somehow narrow it down to something they did or something they discovered specifically. Leaving it as ancient egyptians as a whole would probably be too broad of a subject
